Benito Ferrer – 1898

Andrés Segovia at about age 17 in this c.1909
photograph. It is difficult to identify the guitar he is
playing but it may be a Benito Ferrer he owned and
felt was inadequate for concertizing. Photo courtesy of

The three-piece soundboard is spruce with each of the two seams 1cm outboard of each end of the tie-block. Grain spacing ranges from 28 to 18 per inch with the tightest grain being at the outer edges of the lower bout. The soundboard is highly domed across the width of its upper bout, taking its shape from the profile of the sides and the curved top of the upper harmonic bar. The rosette has a pattern band of interconnected brown and black squares and dashes. This band is bordered on both sides with rings of eight-pointed brown stars linked together with dashes. All of this is set into a black mastic background. The rosewood bridge is decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays on the tie-block and on the wings, and the tie-block is positioned on the bridge so as to leave a protective surface against string whip just below the tie-block. A brass tornavoz is attached to the soundboard below the soundhole. The top diameter of the tornavoz is 94mm, its bottom diameter is 110mm, its depth is 55mm and the internal body depth at the soundhole is 80mm.

Back and sides are Brazilian rosewood. Bass and treble sides are matched but the two halves of the back are not. Light-colored body edging is used and a rosewood strip and small strap button are placed at the lower junction of the sides. The back is well arched across its length and width. Neck and head are Spanish cedar. The ebony fingerboard is a replacement with only 18 frets instead of the customary 19. The face of the head is veneered with rosewood with a center design strip matching the linked stars in the purfling. Tuning machines have steel rollers and round mother-of-pearl grips, except for the fourth string grip which is an ivory replacement. The soundboard has been refinished with lacquer, but the soundboard is in very good condition so this rare guitar can be considered to be in overall good condition. The sound is mature, even and pleasant.
