Daniel Friederich (1932-) of Paris was influenced early in his career by fellow Parisian Robert Bouchet, the most respected French guitar maker of his generation. Considered the most respected luthier of the next generation, Friederich combined a scientific approach and careful analysis with considerable artistry and craftsmanship to extract wonderful sound from various grades and types of woods. His skills are considered among the very finest of contemporary luthiers and this instrument shows flawless workmanship and beautiful execution of design.
The two-piece soundboard is made from close- and straight-grained spruce with even grain spacing of 24 per inch. The rosette shows a central interconnected lozenge pattern in red, deep red and black bounded by inner and outer bands of grain-of-wheat pattern and concentric rings of natural and deep red. The bridge is made of rosewood and its tie-block is topped with a matching lozenge pattern outlined in bone.
The sides and two-piece back are made from perfectly quartersawn Indian rosewood. Neck and head are mahogany and the face of the head is veneered with rosewood which has been carved to delicately outline the slots and to present a central dart-shaped design. Mechanically perfect tuning machines are by Rodgers and have lavishly engraved brass plates and plastic grips. The ebony fingerboard has medium frets. The unique fan-strut pattern has two very long outside struts made of fir that extend through an open lower harmonic bar up to the upper harmonic bar.
This guitar is in excellent condition. Its tone is well-suited to performing in large venues. Notes are vibrant, loud, full and fundamental. Projection is exceptional and the range of color is broad. It has a marvelous balance but retains adequate separation of notes in polytones. Noted guitarists Liona Boyd and Ricardo Cobo both feel that this is one of the most outstanding concert guitars they have played. It has all of the sonic resources necessary for a competent performer to give a great performance.
