The soundboard is made of halves of straight-grained spruce whose grain spacing varies from a very tight 40 per inch at the center joint to 24 per inch at the edges. The rosette and top decorative edging were crafted in marquetry to assemble tiny pieces of dyed woods into intricate patterns. The rosette’s thematic design is a circle of five-lobed polygons with progressively smaller five element designs set inside of them until the tiniest inlaid wood pieces almost disappear to the eye.
The bridge is made of rosewood and its tie–block is topped with a protective ivory plate. The bridge has a protective lip to prevent string damage to the soundboard. Back and sides are maple. Neck and head are Spanish cedar with the face of the head veneered with rosewood. The ebony fingerboard has medium-height frets, and a nineteenth fret only on the treble side. The unusual tuning machines have mechanisms which allow the metal string rollers to be disengaged from their spur gears to save gear wear when installing and removing strings. Tuning grips are made of figured mother-of-pearl.
The tone of the instrument is dark, resonant, sensitive and mature. Notes on different strings blend at the expense of some clarity and separation. Basses are rich and vibrant, the trebles a bit muddy and not concentrated. The guitar has good sustain and balance across the strings. This guitar has been expertly restored.
