This instrument is a beautiful large concert guitar with back and sides made of perfectly quartersawn Brazilian rosewood that exhibits abrupt color changes from dark to blond. Rodríguez has positioned and matched these color variations artistically and has highlighted them with light colored double purfling and edging of dark rosewood. A tale implies that this rosewood came from a door salvaged by Rodríguez from an ancient church. Supposedly, he built about twenty guitars from this door and these instruments are sometimes called “Churchdoor” guitars.
The soundboard is made of two matched halves of spruce with grain spacing ranging from 24 to 18 per inch. The rosette has a complex theme band of alternating green and red circles inside of black hexagons linked by black diamonds. The bridge is rosewood and its tie-block top is decorated with a green and natural line of chevrons framed with a thin red line, all enclosed in a border of bone. Neck and head are cedar and the face of the head is veneered with rosewood which is nicely chamfered around the slots of the head. The fingerboard is ebony with large frets and a scalloped bone nut.
This guitar (and other “Churchdoors”) has had the fingerboard repositioned 2mm towards the body and the frets reset. This correction was made in America at Miguel Rodríguez’s direction shortly after export. This repositioning is evidenced by a shim present behind the nut.
Harmonic bars and crossbars have tapered ends and the center seam of the back is reinforced with a strip of cross-grained cedar. The Rodríguez Cordoba luthier stamp appears on the foot of the heel-block, on the back of the head, and over the lower right edge of the label and onto the back. Miguel Rodríguez Jr.’s personal constructor stamp is on the inner soundboard on the treble side of the soundhole.
